5 Must-Haves for Keeping Your Teeth and Braces Clean

Having braces is really exciting, but it’s a time that comes with a lot of responsibilities. Each time you visit the orthodontist, you may receive new instructions about how to wear rubber bands or other accessories to help treatment and you have to keep your teeth and braces extra clean.

This month, we’ve outlined our top 5 must have items for keeping your teeth and braces as clean as possible.

5 Must-Haves for Keeping Your Teeth and Braces Clean

1. Home toothbrush

There are many toothbrush options available, and it’s important that you find the right toothbrush for you and that you use it every day in the morning and before bed. It’s also important that you pay attention to how you brush your teeth and make sure that you are brushing every surface.

2. Travel toothbrush

When you have braces, we recommend that you brush your teeth after all meals and snacks, and since you probably eat when you aren’t at home you need a toothbrush to go with you. Find an extra toothbrush that you can take with you to school, work, running errands, or wherever you go and politely excuse yourself after meals to go brush those teeth.

3. Floss threader

When you have brackets secured to your teeth, using traditional floss can be challenging. That’s why we give you and all of our patients with braces a floss threader! This little tool will allow you to floss up to the gumline even with braces.

4. Water bottle

Drinking water throughout the day will help remove any excess food that you may have missed while brushing your teeth, and drinking water throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated. We recommend finding a reusable water bottle you love and keeping it filled and with you at all times.

5. Water flosser

A water flosser is just what it sounds like...a tool that uses water to floss between your teeth and even better...your braces! While you can still have a healthy smile without using this special tool, using this tool regularly will just make the job of keeping your teeth clean even easier! A popular brand of water flosser is called the Water Pik.
