Frequently Asked Questions: Guide for Patients During COVID-19

During this uncertain time when we are all dealing with the rapidly changing circumstances, we know there are many questions about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it may affect your orthodontic treatment. Please see the below FAQ to hopefully answer any questions you may have.

How long will Glander Rochford Orthodontics be closed?

As of March 18, 2020 our office will resume normal hours on Monday, April 6, 2020. We are frequently assessing the situation and taking guidance from the American Dental Association and the Indiana Dental Association as we make our decision.  To contact us in the event of an orthodontic emergency involving bleeding, swelling or infection, please call 317-404-2827.

Why does your orthodontic office need to close?

Due to current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, Federal Government, American Dental Association, and the Indiana Dental Association all non-emergent dental and medical procedures are to be postponed.

What should I do if I am wearing braces, Invisalign or an appliance?

Please make sure to continue good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at morning and night time as well as after meals, floss regularly. Try not to eat foods that may cause a bracket to break. Continue to wear elastic bands as you were instructed in your most recent appointment and continue to wear your Invisalign trays as instructed by Dr. Glander and Dr. Rochford. You can read more about taking care of your retainer here.  For Invisalign - if you no longer have trays to continue to change for the next week, continue to wear the last tray that you have for 10-12 hours per day as a retainer (it’s easy to do this at night). This will help your teeth stay in position, and wearing your tray for a shortened amount of time will help it last longer. Make sure to wash your hands before and after placing your trays in your mouth, using elastics, putting your retainer in, or any time you touch your mouth.

What should I do if I am scheduled to start treatment soon?

We are excited for all of our patients to start their orthodontic journey, and we look forward to seeing you soon! We are hopeful that this schedule change will be short in duration and we will see you once we are advised that it is safe to resume normal business.

What should I do if I am scheduled to get my braces off soon?

It is important to note that dental care is very safe for patients and providers because of the standard universal precautions and hospital-level sterilization protocols that are regularly followed.  During the process of cleaning teeth and removing orthodontic bonding materials, aerosols are produced that can possibly contain biological matter, which may contaminate the air or surfaces with COVID-19. This is one of the main reasons non-emergent dental care has been put on hold.  Continue to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly and we look forward to removing your braces once we are advised that it is safe to resume normal business.

I have a routine monitoring appointment upcoming (retainer check, supervision appointment, recall examination, or new patient consultation).

These are important appointments, but they are all elective during a time like this. We will maintain all of our appointment records with our computer system and will work with you to reschedule these appointments once we have been advised to do so.

With the practice of increased hand washing, how should we handle wearing aligners/trays, retainers, elastics, etc?

It is important to continue to wear your trays, rubber bands, elastics and retainers as instructed. Follow recommendations to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after removing or placing any appliance in your mouth.  Read this post for recommendations on cleaning your retainer (and your Invisalign trays).

I lost or broke my retainer or Invisalign tray. What should I do?

We request that you wait until our office resumes normal business hours to handle a broken retainer.  If your Invisalign tray breaks, please move on to the next tray that you have in your set.

What should I do if I have a poking wire or other irritation that is bothering me?

You can call us at 317-404-2827 and one of our team members will walk you through steps you can complete at home (such as placing wax or clipping a wire).

How can I stay up to date on your office hours?

We will work to update our website with any changes as well as our social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.  Thank you so much for your understanding during this uncertain time.

We are truly thankful that you have chosen to support our local small business.

Wishing you health and safety!
